Chapter 7
I don’t know how long I remain stunned in silent shock, but eventually, Jax grows concerned enough that he crouches down in front of me.
“Alana, take a deep breath.” He hesitantly reaches out and cups my face with his hand. “We’ll find a cure, okay?”
My gaze descends to my pretty, pretty princess hand. “But what if we don’t? I don’t want to be a sprite.”
“You won’t be. The changing process takes time, and we’ll make sure to find a cure before it completes. In fact, I might know a person who can help us get one.” He gives me a reassuring smile, revealing a compassionate side of him I’ve seen on a few occurrences. However, the softness in his eyes rapidly fades. “I know you’re freaking out right now, but we do need to talk about what happened before the sprites showed up.”
I shake my hand as a magical warmth kisses my fingertips. “You mean, when I blacked out in the hallway before all shit hit the faerie wings?”
I can’t talk about that yet. Not with Thad right here. Not in this school. Not when two sprites, who were probably sent by Vivianne, ambushed me.
His Adam’s apple bobs up and down as he swallows hard. “You didn’t pass out. You … You stopped breathing.”
“I died?” I whisper in horror.
I don’t need to hear his answer to know the truth. I felt it. I felt death briefly clutch my throat as the darkness dragged me under.
Just like Jane the witch.
The vile taste of death burns on my tongue, and I fight back a gag.
“I’m not sure if you completely died, but your body appeared dead.” His gaze flits to Thad then back to me. Slanting closer, he whispers, “I think maybe we should find somewhere to talk privately.”
I nod.
While I trust Thad, I definitely don’t want to bring up my strange ability in front of him. And with Jax being on the same page as me, I’m slightly confused how Thad was brought into this mess to begin with. How did he end up running in here with Jax? And where is here?
“Come on; let’s go talk in your room for a bit, and let you lie down.” Jax removes his hand from my cheek and stands.
I push to my feet, or more like stumble, and he reaches to steady me.
I hold up my good hand. “I’m cool. Just feeling a little … I don’t know, dizzy with magic …”
My grandfather’s words come rushing back to me; how he said I blacked out from a magical overload from a dead witch, just like with the dead Fey’s power.
Jax’s expression falls as he notes my own expression. “What’s wrong?”
“It’s nothing.” I pretend to be all cool and chill when I’m a clusterfuck of anxiousness inside. “I’m just worried about turning into a sprite; that’s all.”
Jax eyes me over with doubt, but he doesn’t press. At least, not right now. Knowing Jax, he’ll be all up in my business the moment we’re alone.
